In a statement, Poland’s Foreign Ministry condemned Russia’s warning, saying that any attacks on its embassy would be “treated as hostile acts.” A German Foreign Office official told POLITICO on Tuesday that Russia’s threat to foreign nationals “shows that Russia remains committed to escalation.” The official added that the country is “continually assessing the security situation” in Kyiv. The latest spate of Russian strikes on Kyiv comes in response to a Ukrainian attack on the Russian-occupied town of Starobilsk, where Kremlin officials said a student dormitory had been struck, killing 21 people aged 18 to 21. Ukraine’s military denied responsibility, saying it had hit a Russian military target. This is not the first time Russia has urged foreign diplomats to leave the Ukrainian capital. Earlier in May, the country’s foreign ministry called for the evacuation of diplomatic staff, leading to rebukes from European officials. LONDON — The British left must master artificial intelligence to take on authoritarians, a former Downing Street chief of staff has warned. Morgan McSweeney, who masterminded the ruling Labour Party’s general election victory in 2024, said political parties must adapt to the technology, rather than just try to police and regulate it. “It is not unusual in the U.K. and the U.S., especially for the left to begin in a Luddite position and to allow the right to dominate the mastery of a new tool,” McSweeney said at a panel event at the GlobSec Forum in Prague. “I think that is a danger with AI, because it is not about the left and the right, it is about democrats against authoritarians,” he said in one of his first public appearances since resigning as U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s top aide in February. He noted the U.K. could “learn a lot” from what Ukraine is doing. An AI-operated election campaign could target 5,000 different voter target groups, compared to just 10 if run by humans, McSweeney noted. “The risk then for democracies is that election campaigns become much less of a national story and much closer to individual stories, and that becomes harder,” he said.
