General Information

Estonia, officially the Republic of Estonia, is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by the Gulf of Finland across from Finland, to the west by the Baltic Sea across from Sweden, to the south by Latvia, and to the east by Russia. The territory of Estonia consists of the mainland, the larger islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa, and over 2,300 other islands and islets on the east coast of the Baltic Sea. Its capital city of Tallinn, along with the city of Tartu, are the country's two largest urban areas. The Estonian language, of the Finnic family, is the official language and the first language of the majority of nearly 1.4 million people. Erdoğan rejects Israel’s Armenian genocide recognition, points to Gaza deaths
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan hit back at Israel on Tuesday after the country unanimously voted on Sunday to formally recognize the Armenian genocide. The recognition and the subsequent spat is the latest episode in a worsening relationship between the two countries, which has taken a nosedive with Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza. “We do not give the slightest heed to the slanders about our country from the murder network that has the blood of 73,000 innocent Gazans, most of them children and women, on its hands,” Erdoğan said after a cabinet meeting. “In our history there is no genocide, no massacre, no oppression, and no colonialism.” Erdoğan has repeatedly said that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, and last week Turkey’s Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz described Israel’s Armenian genocide recognition vote as “an attempt to cover up their own crimes.” Israel’s government has strongly denied committing genocide. Under discussion is the Ottoman Empire campaign that is estimated to have killed more than 1 million Armenians and is widely viewed by scholars as the first genocide of the 20th century. Numerous EU members recognize the events as a genocide, and in 2015 the European Parliament passed an anti-genocide resolution marking the events’ centenary. Many scholars also consider Israel’s actions in Gaza to constitute genocide. In Tuesday’s address, Erdoğan argued that Israel’s recognition is undercut both by its own “barbarity in Gaza” and by Turkey’s history of rescuing Jews from the Holocaust during the Second World War. “There is the virtue of protecting those who fled from … Nazi persecution,” Erdoğan said. “Those who slander Turkey and the Turkish nation … know this best, if they look at their own history.” The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication.

Conservative ex-mayor Andy Street in the running to oversee Britain’s nationalized railways
LONDON — Conservative former mayor Andy Street is in the running to oversee Britain’s nationalized railways, three people with knowledge of the process told POLITICO. The three people all described Street, who was mayor of the West Midlands from 2017 to 2024, as a leading candidate in the Labour government’s search for the first chair of Great British Railways. The Department for Transport declined to comment. A spokesperson for Street said: “We do not comment on speculation.” Recruitment began in January for the role of chair, which will pay £200,000 to £300,000 a year for 10 days of work a month. The process is ongoing, and the final decision, which will be taken by ministers, has not been made. The publicly-owned company will oversee rail infrastructure and services, which had previously been separated, as part of Labour’s reversal of the Conservative rail privatization from the 1990s. Great British Railways is due to be up and running in 2027, with passenger services transferred to public ownership by the end of that year as private rail operators’ contracts expire. The job was described by the Department for Transport as a “leadership challenge of national importance” and “a once in a generation leadership opportunity.” One of the three people, all granted anonymity to speak frankly, said there was an ongoing conversation in government about whether to make a decision soon or leave it until after Andy Burnham takes over as prime minister, which is likely on July 20. They suggested it was still possible that any decision could be derailed by political considerations about giving a leading Conservative a role in Labour’s flagship nationalisation project. However, another of the three people described Street as a figure who reached across political lines and was respected for his nine-year stint as managing director of John Lewis. Street has history with Britain’s railways; he narrowly decided not to quit the Conservatives in 2023 when former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak scrapped a leg of the planned High Speed 2 rail line from Birmingham to Manchester. He had an ally in Burnham, then mayor of Greater Manchester, who opposed Sunak’s decision vehemently too.
